A Luxury Lakeland Retreat

Tucked away in the tranquil South Lakes, Charcoal House is a modern sanctuary fusing light-infused, pared-back Scandinavian-inspired design with the rich history of the Lake District.

Standing proudly opposite the historic ironworks of Backbarrow, this exclusive hideaway, formerly a charcoal store dating back to the 1800s, has been reimagined as a luxurious spa-style retreat, offering a seamless blend of heritage and contemporary comfort.

Experience the quiet calm of a Lakeland break within the embrace of this utterly unique home. With its sleek cedar cladding, vast glass panels and soft, textured interiors including sheepskin rugs, forest-inspired wallpaper and handcrafted furnishings, Charcoal House is an oasis of tranquillity – the ultimate refuge in which to unwind, recharge and reconnect with nature.

Nestled along a private lane, immerse yourself in the idyllic surrounds of Charcoal House instantly upon arrival, just moments from the heart of the Lake District, with easy access to fell walks, woodland trails and the iconic Haverthwaite Steam Railway, which can whisk you away to Lake Windermere’s shores.

A Grand Arrival

From the moment you arrive, Charcoal House exudes exclusivity. Nestled in a tranquil enclave, just a stone’s throw from the restaurants and spas of Newby Bridge, and just tucked away to the south of Lake Windermere, Charcoal House is a cocoon of calm.

Ample private parking awaits, including a handy EV charging point, ensuring a smooth and seamless arrival, while a thoughtful welcome pack awaits inside, offering all you need for a perfect stay.

Step inside and sense the serenity unfold. The entrance level welcomes you with instant, sweeping views through vast glazed balustrades. The floating walkway, with its crisp angles and open sightlines, creates an effortless connection between each of the three floors. Underfloor heating radiates a gentle warmth, enveloping you in comfort from the moment you arrive.

A Social Haven

This upper floor living space is designed for connection, relaxation and indulgence. The open-plan kitchen, dining and lounge areas are bathed in natural light, with uninterrupted views stretching out across the fells and forests.

The state-of-the-art kitchen is a chef’s dream, featuring a large induction hob, double oven, Quooker boiling water tap and all the essentials—including a wine fridge for those celebratory evenings. Thoughtful details, such as bespoke ‘Charcoal House’ engraved cheeseboards and chopping blocks, add a touch of exclusivity and are perfect for showcasing your purchases after a trip to the renowned Cartmel Cheeses artisan shop nearby.

A quiet breakfast nook offers a peaceful spot for morning coffee, framed by floor-to-ceiling windows that invite the landscape inside. Flowing seamlessly into the dining area, a handcrafted wooden table sits beneath contemporary pendant lighting, creating the perfect setting for memorable meals.

Across the walkway, the lounge beckons with its plush Loaf furnishings and a crackling log-burning stove. With no television to distract, this space encourages long conversations, immersive books and uninterrupted moments of quiet contemplation, all set against a backdrop of 360-degree Lakeland views. A stylish cloakroom completes this level, offering added convenience.

Principal Sanctuary & Cosy Snug

The oak and glass staircase leads down to the central level, where tranquillity takes centre stage. The master suite, with its subdued shades of forest green, is a haven of rest, with a woodland mural stretching across the back wall, creating a deep connection to the surrounding landscape. Luxurious linens, a super-king bed and soft lighting set the scene for deep, restorative sleep.

Restore your senses in the spa-like ensuite, with a walk-in rainfall shower, deep bathtub and a sleek vanity unit.

Just off the landing, a cosy snug awaits - a perfect hideaway for rainy-day afternoons, film nights, or curling up with a glass of wine and a good book.

For The Kids…

On the lower level, two additional king-size bedrooms await. The first, bathed in natural light from an arched, glazed doorway, features a super-king bed, Scandi-inspired furniture and a flat-screen TV. Indulge in relaxation in the ensuite, where you can also find a deep tub, walk-in shower and stylish tiled finishes.

Opposite, the second bedroom is equally inviting, with twin beds perfect for children, a whimsical tree mural and a thoughtfully curated selection of toys - including the all-important dinosaur and robot companions.

The ensuite mirrors the elegance of the other bathrooms, ensuring every guest, young or old, enjoys a spa-like experience.

A well-equipped utility room completes this level, providing all the home-from-home essentials – including washing machine, tumble dryer and ample storage for coats and walking gear. A fully glazed door provides a practical every day entrance, making it easy to step straight indoors after a countryside stroll.

A Garden Designed for Indulgence

Step outside into your private, beautifully landscaped retreat. Lakeland stone chippings lead the way to a serene patio area, where a sheltered gazebo houses a dining table and charcoal barbecue - perfect for long summer evenings.

A boules pitch invites leisurely competition, while the firepit offers a warm, flickering glow, helping to elongate those languid summer evenings.

For the ultimate indulgence, the bespoke Mor + Broze Wild Sauna provides an unparalleled wellness experience, blending the natural elements of sea and heat. Complete the evening with a soak in the outdoor hot tub, gazing up at the starlit Lakeland sky.
